The Larimer County Department of Health and Environment has confirmed the first human case of tularemia in a county resident in 2018. This patient developed swollen lymph nodes, and may have been exposed while gardening at home. Soil can be contaminated by tularemia-causing bacteria from the droppings or urine of sick animals, most often rabbits.

On 7/6/18 the Larimer County Medical Examiner's Office was notified of a male found dead in an alleyway in Fort Collins.

The decedent was identified as 59 year old, James Ahlbrandt, of Fort Collins.

A forensic autopsy was performed and the Cause and Manner of Death are Pending. There is no indication of foul play.

On 07/02/18, the Larimer County Medical Examiner's Office was notified of a 17 year old male's death at Children's Hospital Colorado following a drowning incident that occurred in Lake Loveland earlier that day. The victim was identified as Zachariah Apodaca.

An autopsy was performed on 07/03/18, by J. A. Wilkerson IV, MD. 

The Cause of Death is Cerebral Hypoxia/Edema due to Asphyxia by Drowning. 

The Manner of Death is Accident. 

No further information will be released by this Office.

As the weather gets warmer and the days get longer, outdoor activities become a focus in Larimer County. It’s the time of year where skunks, raccoons and other wildlife are giving birth and many cute baby animals can be found in our county. While it’s tempting to touch or “help” these animals, please remember these animals can carry diseases, including rabies. They are wild animals and need to be left alone and not handled.

On 06/24/2018, the Larimer County Coroner's Office responded to Legacy Park at 300 Woodlawn Drive, Fort Collins, CO to investigate the report of a body found in the Poudre River.  A full forensic autopsy was performed on the morning of 06/25/2018 by Larimer County Coroner James A. Wilkerson, I.V., M.D.  The decedent was identified at 31 year old Cordell W. Starkey, recently of the Fort Collins area.  Dr. Wilkerson determined that the cause of death was Asphyxia by Drowning and the manner of death was Accident.  No other information will be released.
