The Larimer County Board of Health will present the 2017 Public Health Hero Award to Beverly Thurber, Executive Director of the Early Childhood Council (ECCLC) of Larimer County.  A reception will be held in her honor on Thursday, September 21, from 6:00 to 7:00 PM at the Larimer County Courthouse, 200 W. Oak Street in Fort Collins, in the Hearing Room. The reception is open to the public. RSVP at http://bit.ly/2vPYfuO.

Bev has served as the Executive Director of ECCLC since 2008.  She has been the catalyst and convener for multiple county-wide collaborative initiatives focused on protecting and improving the health of children from the prenatal period through early childhood. Under her inclusive leadership, the community has significantly strengthened the collaboration and partnership of agencies and projects focused on young children.

Some of the high-profile projects that Bev has been involved in include the "Be Ready," "KIDS" (Kids' Initiative for Developmental Support), and "Leap" initiatives:

  • Be Ready helps prepare children for kindergarten by working with partner agencies to promote kids’ health and activity, language and learning, and feelings and behavior.
  • KIDS brings together community agencies whose goal is to ensure children’s healthy development (including their social and emotional growth) through a coordinated system that promotes universal standardized developmental screening, informs and supports parents and caregivers, and makes effective referrals when needed.
  • Leap is a family-centered community-wide health initiative that strengthens, aligns and connects Larimer County systems so that all young children can be supported in their social development and emotional wellbeing.

The Joseph Jabaily Public Health Hero Award is given yearly in honor and remembrance of Dr. Jabaily, a Loveland neurologist who died tragically in a charity bicycle race in the summer of 2004.  The award commemorates his many contributions to improving community health and his commitment to public service.
