What is coaching?

Coaching is a designed partnership, with the coach assisting and supporting the client while they connect their inner passion to their external purpose, and helping the client navigate steps to make that a reality.

Coaching is a designed partnership, with the coach assisting and supporting the client while they connect their inner passion to their external purpose and helping the client navigate steps to make that a reality. Coaching may address personal or professional projects, business processes, or general conditions in the client’s life or profession. The coach will not pass judgment, nor will the coach tell the client what they should do.

The coach and the client will engage in direct and personal conversations throughout the working relationship. The coach asks empowering and clarifying questions throughout their time together, including providing feedback, encouragement, and accountability to help clients stay on track and make meaningful progress. Through active listening and thought-provoking questions, the coach creates space for the clients to challenge themselves and help them identify opportunities for change and growth.

The client’s results are based on their commitment to move forward, willingness to challenge themselves, and openness to learning and growth.  The coach manages the process, but the client manages the progress.

Coaching is not:

  • Behavioral Health Therapy - Behavioral Health Therapists typically focus on problems rooted in the past, exploring why things happened.
  • Mentoring - Mentors give advice based on their path or experiences within an industry or career.
  • Consulting - Consultants are hired to provide expert advice. They will tell you what to do and how to do it without the accountability to get things done.

If you have any questions about coaching or the possibility of group coaching, please get in touch with Christine Kuehnast, Employee Relations Manager.

Working with a coach builds a mutually beneficial partnership. The coach and you can rely on each other’s expertise and experience to think more concretely and focus on a common direction of success. You’ll also build a trusting and supportive relationship that supports you to move from where you are to where you want to be based on your values. If you’re not sure of your values, don’t worry, your coach can support you to identify your values.

A coach will help you acquire or hone your ability to set clear goals that are consistent with your values and vision, clarifying the future you want, and the means to get there. They can support you to identify the steps to take and help hold you accountable. Establishing goals will help you broaden your vision and make it happen.

The day-to-day can quickly become overloaded with daily tasks, deadlines, and meetings. The operational wind-ups taking precedence over the vision and the strategy. Your coach can support you to take a step back for reflection and allow space so you remain focused on your initial goal.

A crucial skill to develop, personally and professionally, is communication. When communication goes awry and misunderstandings occur we may find ourselves at odds or in conflict with others. Coaching builds awareness around interpersonal communication skills, why we show up the way we do, and provides strategies to better manage conflicts.

Coaching supports the development of self-awareness, self-regulation, social awareness, emotional literacy, and relationship management. This development supports you to become who you want and are meant to be, both professionally and personally.

The coach is a facilitator who allows for the space and time for you to take a different look at yourself and at your relationships with others. You can utilize the skills you have learned immediately and are encouraged to share them with others.

Time management and efficiency. Your coach can also help you identify areas of performance improvements or efficiencies so you can focus your energy on things that matter to you.
