Larimer County Department of Natural Resources (LCDNR) has announced new boating hours at Horsetooth Reservoir and Carter Lake for the month of May.

A delayed opening of Satanka ramp at Horsetooth Reservoir and North ramp at Carter Lake is due to a seasonal staffing shortage, which has greatly impacted LCDNR’s ability to provide the adequate number of Aquatic Nuisance Species (ANS) inspectors needed to cover all boat ramps. Due to this staffing shortage, LCDNR has prioritized the boat ramps that can accommodate the greatest volume of boat launches.

Recruitment for additional seasonal staff is actively ongoing. Expansion of available boat ramps and hours will occur in tandem with the hiring of additional staff. Until further notice, May boating hours include:

Horsetooth Reservoir County Park

  • South Bay: 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Friday; 6 a.m.- 7 p.m. Saturday-Sunday ONLY. (Starting May 15, 6 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturday-Sunday ONLY.)
  • Inlet Bay: 7 a.m.- 7 p.m., 7 days a week. (Starting May 15, 6 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday-Sunday ONLY.)
  • Satanka: Closed

Carter Lake County Park

  • North Pines: 6 a.m.- 7 p.m., 7 days a week. (Starting May 15, 6 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturday-Sunday ONLY.)
  • South Shore: 6 a.m. - 7 p.m., 7 days a week.
  • North Ramp: Closed

The South Bay ramp at Horsetooth Reservoir and North Pines ramp at Carter Lake have gate systems that allow boaters to exit those ramps after hours. The gates allow vehicles to exit the areas where the ramps are located but not enter. Trailers must be parked at those ramps before hours end for the day.

If you or anyone you know is looking for a fun summer position at Horsetooth Reservoir or Carter Lake, we are encouraging them to apply as an ANS inspector today at
