Colorado SNAP, Colorado Works, Old Age Pension recipients can shop online

Families participating in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program [SNAP] and support programs like Colorado Works, and Old Age Pension in Larimer County can now make online food delivery purchases with their Electronic Benefits Transfer [EBT] card.

The Colorado Department of Human Services [CDHS] launched the program on May 29, 2020 to expand an already-operating pilot program for select SNAP recipients to buy grocery and food items for delivery online.

The launch of the online program is from a federal waiver request by the United States Department of Agriculture [USDA] to increase food access to individuals who need it in the COVID-19 environment.

Two retailers have been approved to accept the EBT cards for online purchases: Amazon and Walmart. Delivery fees, tips and non-eligible items such as alcohol or tobacco cannot be paid using SNAP benefits.

For information on online purchases at Walmart or Amazon visit https://grocery.walmart.com/ or www.amazon.com/SNAP. Both retailers have established accessibility opportunities for SNAP participants to use their service at a very low cost.

“The COVID-19 crisis has exacerbated issues around access to food and other basic necessities,” said USDA Food and Energy Assistance Director Karla Maraccini. The new option will help some individuals and families access food while supporting social distancing, especially for individuals who are more vulnerable to the health impacts of COVID and will, in the long term, be and option for SNAP participants experiencing barriers to conventional shopping for food.”

“CDHS continues to work alongside the USDA to bring more retailers, including local grocers into the program in the future, said Office of Economic Security Director Ki’i Powell. “The opportunity to order groceries online is a huge step in the accessibility for Coloradoans using SNAP.”
