On Wednesday, June 17, 2020, Larimer County officials broke ground on a long-awaited jail improvement facilities project to replace outdated areas in the jail and provide needed space for specialty-bed areas.

Improvements include medical, mental health, and addiction treatment spaces, a new kitchen, laundry and other facilities to ensure continued safe jail operation.

“So much of our focus is around those incarcerated in the facility, to do it humanely, safely and correctly, and also for those working in the facility,” said Larimer County Sheriff Justin Smith.

A new 150 specialty-bed housing unit is included in the project to accommodate a diversifying jail population and those with medical and mental health issues.

The current jail was constructed in 1983. The existing facility is overcrowded, and older areas do not meet current confinement standards.
