On May 28, 2020, at about 5:11 p.m., LCSO patrol deputies and investigators responded to the 400 block of Grand Market Avenue in Berthoud to assist Boulder Police Department officers and detectives who were surveilling a known auto theft suspect.  Deputies arrested Cory J. Lafferty (04/11/1986) of Berthoud and Justin J. Castner (05/23/1989) of Greeley.

Lafferty was booked into the Larimer County Jail on allegations of Aggravated Motor Vehicle Theft (class 4 felony), Theft (class 6 felony), and Violation of Bail Bond Conditions (class 6 felony).  He was released on May 30 after posting $800 bond.  A booking photo is attached.

Castner was booked into the Larimer County Jail on allegations of Aggravated Motor Vehicle Theft (class 4 felony) and 2 counts of Violation of Bail Bond Conditions (class 6 felony).  He was released on June 1 after posting $750 bond.  A booking photo is attached.

Investigators obtained a search warrant for the home and property and recovered five stolen vehicles and two stolen trailers.  Additional stolen items recovered included tools, firearms, credit cards, electronics, and other miscellaneous property.  Many recovered items had been stolen during a spate of vehicle trespasses in Berthoud in late May.   In all, investigators estimate they recovered around $200,000 of property stolen from Berthoud, Boulder, Longmont, Fort Collins, Lakewood, and Parker.

LCSO investigations Captain Robert Coleman said, “The cooperation and hard work of several law enforcement agencies led to the dismantling of this multi-county theft ring.  We are very pleased that many of the victims have already had their property returned to them.”

The charges are merely an accusation and the defendants are presumed innocent until, and unless, proven guilty.
