What exactly does the Larimer County Extension Department do? Kerri Rollins, the new director for this department, joined commissioners at their summer Citizen Meetings to shine a light on one of the “best kept secrets of Larimer County.”

Rollins explained that the Extension Department is the outreach arm of Colorado State University, providing practical, science-based resources to the community. It was created out of the Smith-Lever Act of 1914 that established cooperative services to be offered from Land-grant universities like CSU, specifically in the realm of agriculture.

Today, Larimer County Extension services continue to provide the well-known, traditional offerings of the annual County Fair, the Farmers’ Market and the largest 4-H Program in the state. To keep pace with the changing needs of a growing society, they also provide financial training, STEM (Science, Technology Engineering and Math) programs for elementary-aged children, increasing services for retirement and beyond, and a 20-week course in civic leadership.

To access services, first point of contact is the Larimer County Extension office. They host the program for this area, with both university and county extension agents housed in the county building at 1525 Blue Spruce Drive. Many of the classes and workshops are offered at this location.

Rollins plans to conduct a Community Assessment early next year to find out what Larimer County’s communities would like to see for the future of this important county resource – stay tuned!
