On June 13, 2017, the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office began an investigation into an explosion that occurred near a home in the 3300 block of South County Road 1 in Timnath.

When investigators arrived at the scene on June 13, they discovered a hole in the ground approximately 20 feet deep and only large enough for one person to fit through at a time.  Personnel with the Poudre Fire Authority conducted a carbon monoxide test shortly after their arrival and determined the air quality was not safe for investigators.  It was later determined there was a “room” at the bottom of the hole that extended about six to 10 feet horizontally.

The investigation revealed that Michael Lee Williams (05/25/1982) and a juvenile male had been working on the man-made bunker for months and it was intended to be a tornado shelter.  On the afternoon of June 13, Williams took butane into the bunker to make hash oil.  Later in the day, Williams returned to continue digging the bunker with the juvenile male and an adult male friend.  Once they were in the bunker, Williams planned to light a marijuana cigarette.  While reaching for his lighter, a spark ignited the gas in the air causing a flashover event that severely burned all three of them.  They received treatments for their injuries and have since been released from the hospital.

Investigators obtained an arrest warrant for Williams and he surrendered at the Larimer County Jail on August 24.  He was booked on the following allegations:

Child Abuse (Class 3 Felony);
Child Abuse (Class 3 Felony);
First Degree Assault (Class 3 Felony);
Extraction of Marijuana Concentrate (Class 2 Drug Felony);
Fourth Degree Arson (Class 4 Felony); and
Child Abuse (Class 2 Misdemeanor).

Bond was set at $25,000 and Williams bonded out on August 26.  A booking photo is attached.

The charges are merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until, and unless, proven guilty.
