Immunizations are one of the top 10 public health accomplishments of the 20th Century. Vaccines have prevented countless cases of disease and have saved millions of lives.  Although immunizations have significantly reduced incidence of many serious diseases, vaccination rates for some diseases are not meeting national public health goals. Diseases that used to be common in this country such as polio, measles and mumps can now be prevented by vaccination. Because we are protected by vaccines, we don’t see these diseases nearly as often, but these germs continue to exist today; and so we continue to need to be vaccinated across the lifespan.
