Household Hazardous
Waste Program
Program Excellence Honorable Mention,
awarded in November 1999 by the North American Hazardous Materials
Management Association (NAHMMA) for our program's efficiency,
cost-effectiveness and broad scope of operations.
The Strange Occurrence Award, also awarded
in November 1999 by NAHMMA for "Grandpa's Hot Boxes." These
"hot boxes" were radioactive materials that were temporarily
housed at our HHW Collection Facility, brought to us by a Fort Collins
resident whose recently deceased grandfather had been storing them at
his California home. The Fort Collins resident unknowingly transported
the radioactive materials home along with other memorabilia from his
grandfather's house. Once he realized they were radioactive, he
contacted our HHW facility. While we do not normally accept radioactive
materials, we did this time, working closely with the Environmental
Protection Agency and Colorado's Radiation Division to ensure that the
materials were stored properly until the EPA could take them from us. |
