June 2002 Update on the Wood Diversion Project
Although Larimer County Natural Resources is still examining methods of keeping wood and yard waste out of the landfill, the Wood Waste Diversion Project has been discontinued. Holnam, Inc. (which changed its name to Holcim (US) Inc. in December 2001) is closing its cement plant in LaPorte. Holnam had been interested in using the Larimer County Landfill's wood waste as an alternative fuel at the plant.
Still, the landfill is diverting some wood waste. Each year, the landfill accepts for free county residents' Christmas trees, which are ground into mulch. The mulch is then given away free of charge or used at the landfill for revegetation projects. This year, we are setting aside clean loads of branches, which will also be ground into mulch. In addition, the City of Fort Collins is continuing its construction debris project.
So while one avenue of wood waste diversion has led to a dead end, the Natural Resources Department hasn't given up the fight against this bulky waste.
