LANDFILL FACTS

About 200,000 cubic yards of wood waste is buried in the landfill each year (1999 figures). This is roughly equal to piling wood on a football field 8 stories high.

Wood Waste makes up nearly 25% of the total waste stream at the Larimer County Landfill.

Most Wood Waste comes from construction debris, tree limbs and stumps.

The Wood Diversion Project:
What Possibilities Are Being Explored?

Waste reduction is one of the most significant issues in waste management throughout the country. Larimer County, Colorado is exploring ways to lengthen the life of our current landfill through various modern management practices, including expanding the recycling center for greater volume, waste reduction and public outreach and education.

As a part of the waste reduction effort, Larimer County is exploring the feasibility of burning some of the construction and other wood waste as alternative fuel in the large, commercial kiln owned by Holnam, Inc.

Holnam, Inc., the largest producer of concrete products in the nation, operates a plant north of LaPorte in Larimer County. Coal is their normal fuel source. They are researching alternative fuels that might be less expensive than coal. Larimer County and Holnam, Inc. are researching a possibly mutually beneficial project, that is, Holnam may find a source of cheaper fuel, and Larimer County may be able to divert some wood waste from being buried in our landfill. There are many concerns to be studied, and questions to be answered. At this point, this project is in the "What If" stage.
