With curbside and alley recycling becoming available to many Berthoud residents in January, the Town Board recently made the decision to move the residential recycling drop-off site from Welch Ave. and N. 3rd Street (near the post office) to the Berthoud Waste Transfer Station, south of Highway 56 off County Line Road. The move took place Friday, January 11.
As many residents know, the previous residential recycling drop-off had been plagued with problems, namely with bins overflowing and people leaving recyclables and trash lying around on the ground, making the area an unsightly mess. With the move to the transfer station, dropping off recyclables will be more controlled, albeit less convenient for some. The transfer station is open only Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., so the recycling bins will only be available for residential recycling drop-off during those times.
Both the mixed recycling container, owned by Larimer County, and the cardboard container, provided by Waste Management, Inc., will be moved. In the mixed container, residential recyclers can drop off newspapers, junk mail, magazines, catalogs, aluminum and steel cans, glass bottles and jars, and plastic bottles and jars. Corrugated cardboard and brown paper bags can be dumped into the cardboard container for recycling. More specific recycling guidelines
The transfer station is gated and locked when not open. Absolutely no trash or recyclables can be left on the ground on or around the property, whether the site is open or closed. Violators will be prosecuted, and littering can carry a hefty fine.
To get to the transfer station coming from Berthoud, go east on Highway 56 and turn south on County Line Road. Travel about one-half mile and turn east on the first gravel road. The transfer station is on the south side of the road. Call 498-5770 for 24-hour information.
