Fun, food, games and giveaways await visitors to the April 21 Open House at the Garbage Garage Education Center. Celebrate Earth Day (which is April 22) with us, while exploring the colorful and interactive displays and learning all you ever wanted to know about trash! Cody Landstrom, a local magician, will provide additional entertainment, and while you're there, we encourage you to vote for your favorite artwork from the finalists of our student “Reusable Art” contest.
Never been to the Garbage Garage? Now's your chance to join the thousands of others who have enjoyed the education center. "We've received only positive and enthusiastic responses from our visitors," said Cheryl Kolus, the Solid Waste Department's environmental educator.
The first thing visitors will see upon entering the Garbage Garage is a huge “Mountain of Trash.” As they enter the mountain’s “tunnel,” they’ll learn just how much trash they create and why it can be a problem. Patty Packrat, a cartoon character and the Garbage Garage “spokesrat,” is seen on several displays, leading the visitor through the maze of exhibits.
You'll also learn about the 3Rs - reducing, reusing and recycling - as well as how landfills work and what do about household hazardous wastes.
Adults and kids of all ages are invited to the open house, which runs from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 21.
The Garbage Garage is located at the Larimer County Landfill on S. Taft Hill Road, Fort Collins, about two miles south of Harmony Road. There is never an entrance fee. Those who can’t make it to the open house but want to check out the Garbage Garage at another time should call (970) 498-5772 to schedule a tour, or drop in during our regular hours (Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.).
