The 2007 Reusable Art Contest Winners Have Been Chosen

Three grand prize winners were chosen from 15 finalists in the 5th annual Reusable Art Contest, sponsored by the Larimer County Solid Waste Department. Visitors to the Garbage Garage Education Center’s Earth Day open house on April 21 voted for their favorite artwork made from trash or scrap items, with the top three vote-getters garnering blue ribbons.

“We had a lot of really creative entries,” said Cheryl Kolus, environmental educator for the Solid Waste Department. “It was definitely a tough competition.”

The grand prize winners were:

  • “The Sunken Person” made by Elia Betschen, a 2nd grader at Shepardson Elementary in Fort Collins;
  • “The Horse” made by Aleia Johnson, a kindergartener at Eyestone Elementary in Wellington; and
  • “The Litter Bug” made by Sirah Matrix and Ryan McDonald, both 4th graders at Lab Elementary in Fort Collins.

Each winner was awarded a prize bag of “recycling goodies” and $50.00, and their artwork will be on public display at the Garbage Garage for one year. The remaining finalists each received a prize bag as well.

The Reusable Art Contest is held every spring and is open to K-12 students throughout Larimer County. The Garbage Garage, located at the Larimer County Landfill, is the Solid Waste Department’s award-winning waste and recycling education center.
