Garbage Garage Wins Another Award

The Garbage Garage, Larimer County’s waste and recycling education center, was recently honored as an “Outstanding Colorado Recycling/Diversion Program” by the Colorado Association for Recycling (CAFR). CAFR is a non-profit organization formed as the independent voice of public, private and citizen recyclers in Colorado and is an affiliate of the National Recycling Coalition. The award was given to Larimer County Solid Waste Department staff at CAFR’s annual Recycling Summit held in Breckenridge June 20-21.

The Garbage Garage opened in 2003 and has been a great success. Last year, more than 2,100 visitors of all ages toured the education center, coming from as far as Nebraska and Washington. The center has displays and interactive activities relating to the 3 Rs—reducing, reusing and recycling—landfills and household hazardous wastes.

“It’s a pretty unique place,” said Cheryl Kolus, the solid waste department’s environmental educator. “Visitors are always impressed with what they see and learn here. Who knew learning about trash could be so fun?”

In 2003, the Garbage Garage was presented the “Best New Program Award” by the North American Hazardous Materials Management Association for the creative educational opportunities the center provides.

The Garbage Garage is located at the Larimer County Landfill, 5887 S. Taft Hill Road, Fort Collins. It’s open for drop-in visitors most Wednesdays and Thursdays this summer from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Tours may also be scheduled in advance. In addition, summer activities for kids, such as paper making and a composting class, are being offered for the first time this year. For more information, call 498-5775 or 498-5772.
