Bull's-Eye:Target of Criticism

By Sheriff Jim Alderden

Several of my recent Bull’s-eye articles have come under fire. How appropriate.

Two local attorneys took exception with my article, Illegitimi Non Carborundum which criticized some of the sleazy tactics frequently used by defense attorneys. They responded by filing a Motion with the Court to have me found in Contempt of Court. (Honestly, I hold no contempt for our Courts here in Larimer County. Regarding defense attorney’s: I plead the Fifth.)

Certain members of the Board of County Commissioners have also objected to my editorials. This isn’t the first time. Many of you will recall the incident a few years ago when one of the commissioners inquired with the Coroner about having me arrested. My offense: distributing letters at the fairgrounds which were critical of the commissioners’ budget priorities and inviting the public to a meeting to help me determine what budget cuts to make. When I exposed in a recent Bull’s-eye how the same commissioner had manipulated the current budget process, members of the commissioners’ staff contacted my staff requesting that a disclaimer be placed on the Bull’s-eye stating that these were my opinions, not the official opinions of Larimer County Government.

My last Bull’s-eye regarding the Christmas light controversy (can you even believe this would be a controversy?) has come under fire with some commissioners and the county manager questioning the legality of my editorializing on the county website, expressing fear of potential litigation. (The commissioners publish their own version of the Bull-sheet and Bull’s-eye called the Insider monthly.) As reported in the World Net Daily headline, “County investigates sheriff for supporting Christmas.”

It appears to me (my opinion) that the county authorities are gun shy about allowing me to express my opinions on the county website. We are exploring the possibility of going completely off the county site and onto a private server. Until we are able to do that, I’ve decided to allow the commissioners and county attorney to censor my following comments regarding this latest controversy.
