Park Situation

There is no hunting allowed at any time, and no weapons of any type allowed in the Park.  (Includes paintball, airsoft, BB guns & pellet guns)

Now is a great time for hiking on the trails.  The mornings are crisp, cool and clear usually.  The views from the Ramsay-Shockey trail are beautiful this time of year.  Be sure to bring plenty of water, stay on the trail and watch your footing with the recent snow fall.   The hike is of moderate difficulty but the view is worth the effort.

Fishing Conditions

Trout fishing has been slow this past week by all recent reports.  A number of tiger muskie have been seen but most are not biting because of an abundant supply of smaller fish.   DOW stocked the reservoir on September 09 with an unknown number of trout.    For Division of Wildlife current conditions and stocking reports, go to: http://wildlife.state.co.us/Fishing/Reports/StatewideConditions/

AS THE COLD WEATHER SETS IN PLEASE REMEMBER THAT ICE FISHING IS NOT ALLOWED.  THE WATER LEVELS FLUCTUATE EVEN IN THE WINTER MAKING THE ICE UNSTABLE.  IT IS NOT SAFE TO WALK ON.

Water Level

The water level has been changing frequently, and sometimes rapidly. The reservoir is currently at 70% of capacity.   The boat ramp is out of the water now but small boats can still be launched below the ramp. Be careful when doing so and remember that ALL trailored boats must be inspected before launching on any reservoir in the state.   Help us to keep our reservoir's open by getting inspected.  Aquatic Nusance Species, mainly the Zebra and Quagga Mussle, would devastate our reservoir's and close them to public use. Camping

Windy Pines campground is now closed for the season, but the Launch and Blue Mountain campgrounds at Pinewood will remain open.  Now is a good time to enjoy a weekend without the summer crowds.  The winter rates are now in effect.  Non electric sites will remain at $15, electric sites will drop from $20 to $15.  The daily vehicle permit will remain at $7.

Wildlife

There have been recent sightings of a mountain lion in the area.  There have been a number of bear sightings reported, and some with cubs.  The cubs are larger now but remain with the mother.  They do live in this area but usually stay away from people. If you spot one keep a safe distance and notify Park officials.   The bears are looking for food now to add fat for the big winter sleep.  Remember to keep your site cleaned up and food secure.  A bear's nose is 100 times more sensitive than a human's, and they can literally smell food five miles away.   For more information on bears you can visit the Division of Wildlife's Living With Wildlife web page at:http://wildlife.state.co.us/WildlifeSpecies/LivingWithWildlife/
