Park Situation

2009 Annual Permits are available for purchase.

All trails are well maintained and in good shape.

The annual free Firewood Collection Program has begun.  The program is currently full, please check www.larimer.org/firewood for upcoming information on any openings!

Camping

Backcountry camping is permitted in Horsetooth Mountain Open Space.  All overnight campsites must be at least 100 feet from any stream or trail. All human waste must be buried 12 inches deep or packed out. This is low impact, leave no trace camping.  No open flames are allowed.  Campers must check in with ranger staff and obtain a backcountry camping permit prior to camping.  To contact a County Ranger or for more information call (970) 679-4570.

Wildlife

Mule deer, black bear, coyotes, and four species of snake are all common.  The prairie rattlesnake is the only poisonous snake in the foothills.  Colored to blend in with the dry rocky surroundings, this snake is sometimes seen in the Horestooth Mountain Open Space.  To avoid a negative encounter with rattlesnakes, refrain from placing hands and feet into enclosed or non-scouted areas.  The garter snake, bull snake, and milk snake are also often encountered during the warm spring, summer, and fall months.

Mountain lions also reside within the property of Horsetooth Mountain Open Space; they are a rare sight even though they are year-round residents.  Keeping small children close while hiking is always a smart precaution.

Wildflowers

Winter has arrived!  Wildflowers are dormant for the season.  Check beck in around early spring for updates on the arrivals.

For information on guided wildflower hikes, check out our Events Calendar!

Trail Conditions

Weather is unpredictable during this time of year, so be aware of quickly changing conditions.  Be prepared for rain, wind, chill, lightning, and heat.  Bring warm clothes and extra food and water.  Please use extra caution when hiking or riding on wet trails.  Mountain bikers and horseback riders, please avoid these areas to prevent excess trail damage.  Please refrain from going off trail to avoid muddy areas, this causes trail widening and erosion.

Horsetooth Rock Trail and Horsetooth Falls Trail are closed to bikers and horseback riders due to the heavy foot traffic along these trails.

Trail maintenance is an ongoing project at Horsetooth Mountain Open Space.  All trails remain open, however, you may encounter workers during weekdays, or select weekends.  To assist with Larimer County's Adopt - a - Trail program please call (970) 679-4552

Please report any concerns or trail problems to a ranger.  Rangers can be contacted at (970) 679-4570.
