Park Situation

Much of Hermit Park is scheduled to be open to the public for Memorial Day weekend, excluding all trails and some camping areas where construction continues.  Just a few of the projects currently underway:

  • The main road must be brought up to code, which includes smoothing, widening, adding material to the road base, repairing, and adding additional drainage culverts
  • Campground roads and campsites have not been utilized in two or more years--staff have been fixing washed out roads, cleaning parking spaces, painting picnic tables, and clearing slash piles
  • Complete renovation of the park entrance: new road alignment, entrance station, new visitor center/staff offices
  • Building a public parking lot for the group use area and temporary Homestead Meadows and Kruger Rock trailhead
  • Demolition of buildings that did not meet county and/or state codes
  • Installing RV sites for volunteer camphosts
  • Designing and installing numerous signs
  • Extensive cleanup and repair on group use pavilion
  • Training new seasonal staff

The group use area will accomodate up to 300 people and includes a covered pavilion, private campground, and of course the spectacular beauty of the Rocky Mountains!  Early reservations for your wedding, family reunion, company picnic, or any other occasion are available--please call (970) 679-4570 to obtain a Special Event application.

Tremendous thanks to all the volunteers from HP and the Friends of Larimer County Parks and Open Lands for all their hard work cleaning cabins, painting picnic tables, restoring campsites, removing old horseshoe pits and bird boxes, and stacking slash piles--we couldn't have done it without your dedication and enthusiasm!

Camping

Hermit Campground and 13 camper cabins will be open beginning Friday, May 23, and reservations will be available as of Saturday, May 10, at 8:00 a.m.  Don't delay--secure your summer camping early!

Wildlife

A moose and her calf were spotted on the morning of May 3.  Marmots and ground squirrels frolic among the rocks on warm spring days.  The resident red-tailed hawk soars over the group use pavilion daily.  Lots of coyote activity is seen in the meadows.

Park Events

Park opening will happen in two phases: On Friday, May 23, Hermit Campground and 13 camper cabins will be open to the public.  Two more campgrounds, camper cabins, and trails will open later in the summer when construction is completed.  Watch for the grand opening celebration to be scheduled in late summer!
