Larimer Energy LLC has scheduled a lighting of the gas flare at the Larimer County Landfill beginning Monday, October 26.   This flare is part of the landfill gas collection system currently being installed at the Landfill to capture and process methane gas. The “candlestick” flare that will be burning is located north and west of the Landfill maintenance shop.

The county previously installed collection pipes in the closed areas of the landfill to passively vent the gas that is produced as buried trash decomposes. The rate of gas production has been increasing as the landfill grows in volume and a small gas blower and flare assembly was installed to increase gas collection and control.  The next step in capturing and utilizing the methane gas will be the installation of a building that will house the engine for generating electricity.

The flame of the clean-burning methane is invisible in the daylight but landfill neighbors and passing motorists are likely to notice it at night.  For further information or if you have questions, please contact Stephen Gillette, (970) 498-5762 or e-mail sgillette@larimer.org.
