Guided Hike:
Saturday, November 21, at 9:00 a.m. “What Would the Pilgrims Eat?” What would the intrepid forebears of the U.S. have eaten if they had landed on the shores of the Rocky Mountains? Join Naturalists Caroline and Jay for a holiday walk around the Wild Loop at the Devil’s Backbone in search of wild edibles worthy of the pilgrims’ table. Hike rating: easy. Please wear sturdy shoes and bring water for the trail. Approximately 3-hour program. Program is free; no registration required. For questions please call Rob at (970) 679-4561.
Astronomy on Open Space:
Friday, November 27, at 6:30 p.m. “Astronomy at Fossil Creek” Please join the Northern Colorado Astronomical Society for an evening under the stars at Fossil Creek Reservoir Regional Open Space, located just west of the I-25/Windsor interchange on the north side of Carpenter Rd/Hwy 392. Enjoy views of the constellations, bright satellites and meteors. Bring binoculars for tips on sky targets. Visitors can try several types of telescopes and get close-up views of the Moon’s craters, mountains and basins. A typical night offers a variety of sky objects such as star clusters, galaxies and nebulae. Bright planet features can be seen on some nights, including Jupiter's moons and cloud belts, Saturn's rings, and the phases of Venus. The event may be canceled due to cloudy skies or high winds. Dress for 15-20 degrees colder than the evening temperature and bring along a folding chair or pad for the ground. Dogs are not permitted at the site. Free and open to the public. Approximately 3-hour program. Check www.ncastro.org for event status and visible planets. Please contact Rob Novak at (970) 679-4561 for more information or questions.
2009 Bald Eagle Watches:
Each year Bald Eagles from the Yukon and beyond migrate south to Fort Collins to roost at Fossil Creek Reservoir Regional Open Space, located off Highway 392, just west of the Windsor/I-25 interchange. Our feathered guests are typically with us from the middle of November until March. The Larimer County Department of Natural Resources will be offering multiple opportunities for the public to view the eagles and hear a Naturalist-led talk about the majestic birds. All eagle watches are completely free and involve only a short walk along a paved trail to get to the viewing area. Eagle watches will be canceled because of snow, high winds, or poor visibility due to fog.
