Construction crews have completed primitive roadways to re-connect two significant neighborhoods, The Retreat and Big Elk Meadows, to the mainline road system in Larimer County. Both areas, with a total of about 400 properties have been cut off from vehicular access since the flood in mid September.
Devil’s Gulch Road (CR 43) has been built from Drake to the Dunraven Glade Road (CR 51B) which provides access to The Retreat subdivision. Access is via Estes Park to Drake on US 34. Credentials are required for use of US 34.
Big Elk Meadows Road (CR 47) has been built from US 36 to the County Line and provides access to the Big Elk Meadows neighborhood however credentials on US 36 are still needed until US 36 opens to the public at noon on Monday.
Use of the roadways is restricted and for residents only. The roadway is primitive, rough, and is best suited for 4-wheel drive and high clearance vehicles. Both CR 43 and CR 47 still include a low water crossing. Residents need to be aware that access to various roadways inside the neighborhoods or individuals driveways may not be available.
The roadways will be open for use all day on Sunday, November 3rd. Starting Monday, the roadways will be open only after 5:30 pm and before 6:30 am each day. During work hours construction crews need the time and ability to utilize their heavy equipment and work efficiently to continue to improve the roads (including placing culverts where the road is impassable for several hours).
Larimer County staff will work next week with the Contractors’ construction crews to identify a window of time for residents to access their properties during working hours (for propane delivery etc). Details will be posted at the County’s flood page on the Virtual Courthouse at: http://www.larimer.org/flooding2013/
