At some point business owners face succession of ownership. This may be by choice or for retirement. Some owners have family members or key employees who can take the reins, but most companies will either pass to an unrelated third party or wind down to liquidation. Less than 25% of companies are successfully marketed and sold. Whatever your expectation for succession, it is important that you define and manage the process.
The first session in this season’s series of Employers’ Roundtables, “Succession Management,” presented by David Cunningham, Eighty 20 Advisors, LLC, is scheduled for 8 AM-9:30 AM, Thursday morning, October 18. This seminar will make the case for implementation of a step by step exit process and will include: definition of the owner’s objectives; protection of current assets and disaster recovery preparation; selection of appropriate advisors; review of costs and profits ; development of a defensible valuation; preparation of an offering package; selection of a business broker; deal negotiation; and transition execution.
Please note: This season’s Employers’ Roundtables in Fort Collins, October-May will all take place on the first floor of the Larimer County Courthouse Offices, 200 West Oak Street.
Employers’ Roundtables are presented free of charge by the Larimer County Workforce Center and the Larimer County Enterprise Zone, and are sponsored by the Coloradoan Media Group and the Northern Colorado Business Report.
