The Board of Larimer County Commissioners today declared October as Wildfire Awareness Month. Partnering with Boulder, Clear Creek, Douglas, El Paso, and Jefferson counties, each county will recognize the effort in their own way.

This is the first year of a cooperative effort among counties to recognize one month for Wildfire Awareness. All of these counties include forested areas that residents call home, visitors enjoy recreating in and Coloradans depend upon for resources such as drinking water. With population growth in the forested areas, there is an increased risk of wildfire and its impact on residents. Wildfire Awareness Month provides the opportunity to focus on education and outreach to these communities about the impacts of wildfires and how they can help reduce the risks.

Larimer County Board of Commissioners Chair Lew Gaiter III supports these Wildfire education efforts, “The experience of the High Park Fire brings forth the importance of working with partners to expand knowledge and awareness surrounding wildfires in Colorado.”
