LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS UNITE TO ADDRESS RABIES THREAT

Ft. Collins, Colo. (Sept. 25, 2012) – Larimer Humane Society, Larimer County Veterinary Medical Association and local veterinary clinics have united to organize a community-wide rabies vaccination day. Free and low-cost vaccinations will be available throughout Larimer County from 9 a.m. to noon on Sat., Sept. 29. Free vaccines and supplies were provided by American Veterinary Medical Association, Boehringer Ingelheim and Merck Animal Health.
Last May, terrestrial rabies entered populated areas of Larimer County for the first time ever. Since then, the numbers of animals infected with the disease continues to grow. In an effort to increase the number of companion animals protected from the disease, Larimer Humane Society convened a coalition of local organizations to plan a community-wide vaccination day on Sat., Sept. 29.
“With World Rabies Day on Friday, it seemed a perfect time to aggressively address this threat to our own community,” said Judy Calhoun, Executive Director of Larimer Humane Society. “Rabies is here and the best protection for our pets is to get vaccinated.”
World Rabies Day is an annual day aimed at reducing numbers of rabies cases worldwide. This year, it will be held on Fri., Sept. 28. This one-day push for vaccinations involves 150 countries and has succeeded in increasing the number of vaccinated animals by almost 8 Million since it began in 2006.
People can bring their cats and dogs to one of the satellite locations in Larimer County for a free rabies vaccination on Sat., Sept. 29 between 9am and noon. Veterinarians onsite will do a brief health check and administer vaccines. Volunteers will provide the necessary paperwork and offer pet licenses, when applicable.
If pet owners would prefer to see their veterinarian, they are encouraged to do so. Participating clinics will provide varying promotions which may include free or reduced cost exams and vaccines and reduced cost testing for other diseases.
