Applications for the 2013 Larimer County Class of the Colorado Family Leadership Training Institute (FLTI) are now being accepted. FLTI is a series of 20 sessions on leadership training, civic literacy, and civic participation skills hosted by Larimer County Extension. FLTI is based on the premise that family members are the best advocates for children and families in communities. Community leaders including parents, youth, and family members, can be effective when they speak out on issues and inform policymakers, the media, and the community, about the needs of their members.
From the graduates of the Class of 2012 Peggy Ortiz states, “The sessions have shown me that I do have a voice and I’m learning to better express myself through intellect and not my emotions.” Michael Pruznick shares, “My FLTI experience has been totally awesome. FLTI has helped me understand why I have previously had difficulties in advocating for issues.” And Audra Montoya-Baker says, “Thanks to FLTI I’m no longer JUST a single mother. I’m a family leader.”
Each year this opportunity is offered to 25 participants who are screened and selected based on their availability and readiness to become effective change agents on behalf of children, youth and families. Previous FLTI classes have included a cross-section of people including young adults to grandparents, single moms, dads, couples, those with community leadership experience and those who are just beginning the journey of civic engagement. Selected participants will come together over the 20 weeks of training which includes:
In exchange for FREE registration, participants give the commitment of time reflected in class attendance and a written community project.
