UPDATED: October Guided Hikes and Programs on Larimer County Open Spaces

Nature Notes Club

Larimer County Natural Resources Nature Notes Club is accepting new members throughout the fall. You can join current members already journaling in the style of John Muir and Aldo Leopold with Volunteer Naturalist Lisa.  

The club will have several outings throughout the County’s open spaces system, allowing members to immerse themselves in the full range and scope of what the open spaces have to offer. Club members will receive basic instruction on sketching, ecology, geology, wildlife, and other natural sciences to enhance the experience. Club members can participate in all sessions, or just a few, whatever fits their schedules. 

This month’s meetings will be held on October 10 and 24. Please email Heather Young at hyoung@larimer.org or call (970) 679-4489 for more details and to sign up. 

Guided Hikes and Programs

·         Friday, October 5 at 8:30 a.m. "Take It Outside with Your Commissioner" Hike at Devil’s Backbone Open Space, located just west of Loveland off of Hwy. 34, with Commissioner Tom Donnelly and Open Lands Program Manager Kerri Rollins. This informal opportunity to visit with an elected official will give you the chance to ask anything you'd like about the county in a spectacular outdoor setting. Come on out and get to know Tom and Kerri! Hike rating: easy. Please bring water for the trail and dress appropriately for the weather. Approximately 2-hour program. No registration required. ·         Saturday, October 6 at 12:00 p.m. “Picnic on the Poudre” Join us at Magpie Meander Natural Area (west end of Hickory Street in Fort Collins) with your family to learn about and participate in activities that are all about exploring nature! Activities will be led in English and Spanish. Free for all! Stop by anytime between noon and 4 p.m. No registration needed, but RSVP appreciated. ·         Monday, October 8 at 10:00 a.m. “Tiny Trekkers: Trees Are Terrific!” Join a Naturalist for a special program designed for your toddler and you. This program at Devil’s Backbone Open Space, located just west of Loveland, off of Hwy. 34, will be a morning filled with crafts, stories, and fun facts about trees! A parent or guardian must accompany the child for this hour-long program. After the program, feel free to explore the open space with your child! Program is free. No registration required. Please direct questions to Heather at (970) 679-4489.

 

·         Saturday, October 13 at 12:00 p.m. “Picnic on the Poudre” Join us at the CSU Environmental Learning Center (located off W. Drake St. in Fort Collins) with your family to learn about and participate in activities that are all about exploring nature! Activities will be led in English and Spanish. Free for all! ·         Monday, October 22 at 10:00 a.m. “Tiny Trekkers: Slightly Scary Skins and Skulls” Join a Naturalist for a spooky program designed for your toddler and you. This program at Devil’s Backbone Open Space, located just west of Loveland, off of Hwy. 34, will be a morning filled with crafts, stories, and fun facts about whether or not skins and skulls are scary! A parent or guardian must accompany the child for this hour-long program. After the program, feel free to explore the open space with your child! Program is free. No registration required. Please direct questions to Heather at (970) 679-4489.

 

·         Saturday, October 27 at 10:00 a.m. “Messages in Stone at the Devil's Backbone” Take a short hike with Naturalist Ed through millions of years of geologic history visible in and near Devil’s Backbone Open Space, located just west of Loveland off Hwy. 34. Learn key geologic ideas and how they help reveal the stories in the rocks of this prominent landmark.  The hike will be about 90 minutes and about 1 mile in length.  Hike rating: easy.
