ROLE
A Weed Warrior or Weed Scout assists staff in the implementation strategy for the control of noxious weeds resulting in having a minimal impact to surrounding native vegetation. The Weed Warrior would work in a group hand pulling weeds in a designated area. The Weed Scout would work alone identifying and mapping weeds.
DUTIES
Duties vary, but can be a combination of the following:
- Hand pulling weeds with other volunteers (usually for two hours)
- Removing weedy trees
- Spreading grass seed
- Locating noxious weeds and marking maps with locations.
- Walking over rough terrain
- Knowledge of landscaping and ground maintenance helpful but not necessary
QUALIFICATIONS
- Friendly and courteous to staff and to communicate clearly with them
- Provide own transportation
- Be in good physical condition and able to bend and pull weeds
- Willing to work outdoors
- Team player, work in a group with other volunteers
- Be able to work a two (2) hour shift
- Abide by Park and Open Space regulations and safety guidelines
OUR RESPONSIBILITY
- Prepare and train volunteers through orientation and on-the-job training or instruction
- Organize and schedule volunteers in an efficient and timely manner
- Provide necessary equipment and supplies
- Recognize and reward volunteers as valued team members
VOLUNTEER'S RESPONSIBILITY
- Be on time
- Show up on work days prepared and dressed appropriately, no sandals or open-toed shoes
- Learn to properly identify noxious weeds
- Weed Scouts learn to properly make map notations of noxious weed locations
- Provide excellent customer service to staff and visitors
- Complete time sheets and turn in hours on a regular basis (timesheets available on-line at www.larimer.org/parks)
- Return tools and supplies to supervisor at the end of your shift
- Provide own transportation
- Provide own "creature comforts" as needed - hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, raingear, sack lunch & water
- Take ownership of your own safety and the safety of others.
- Bring water, work gloves and sun protection
RISKS
- Heat stress-bring and drink a lot of water
- Rattlesnakes are located on our parks and open spaces
- Sore muscles from pulling and blisters on hands
- Injuries or damage from misuse of tools or equipment
- Inclement weather (lightening, rain, etc.)
- Disease, stings, or bites from insects, such as mosquitoes and spiders.
