Landscape / Gardner Volunteer Expectations

Department: Larimer County Parks and Open Lands
Locations: Carter Lake Visitor Center Parks and Open Spaces
Reports to: Project Leader

ROLE

A Landscape / Gardner Volunteer will assist staff in keeping areas around park or open space facilities, entrance stations, campgrounds, information kiosks, rest areas and other highly visual sites, tidy and attractive. Volunteers may be asked to assist at several properties.

DUTIES

Duties vary, but can be a combination of the following:

  • Hand pulling weeds
  • Trimming bushes
  • Colleting tumble weeds
  • Watering
  • Maintaining flower boxes and rock gardens
  • Knowledge of landscaping and plants helpful but not necessary

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Friendly and courteous to staff and to communicate clearly with them
  • Provide own transportation
  • Be in good physical condition and able to bend and pull weeds
  • Willing to work outdoors
  • Work individually
  • Abide by Park and Open Space regulations and safety guidelines

OUR RESPONSIBILITY

  • Prepare and train volunteers through orientation and on-the-job training or instruction
  • Organize and schedule volunteers in an efficient and timely manner
  • Provide necessary equipment and supplies
  • Recognize and reward volunteers as valued team members

VOLUNTEER'S RESPONSIBILITY

  • Be on time
  • Show up on work days prepared and dressed appropriately, no sandals or open-toed shoes
  • Learn to properly identify noxious weeds
  • Complete time sheets and turn in hours on a regular basis (timesheets available on-line at www.larimer.org/parks)
  • Return tools and supplies to supervisor at the end of your shift
  • Provide own transportation
  • Provide own "creature comforts" as needed - hat, sunglasses, raingear and snacks.
  • Take ownership of your own safety and the safety of others.
  • Bring water, work gloves and sun protection

RISKS

  • Heat stress-bring and drink a lot of water
  • Rattlesnakes are located on our parks and open spaces
  • Sore muscles from pulling and blisters on hands
  • Injuries or damage from misuse of tools or equipment
  • Inclement weather (lightening, rain, etc.)
  • Disease, stings, or bites from insects, such as mosquitoes and spiders.
