Campground Programs Volunteer Expectations

Program: Blue Mountain and Horsetooth Park Districts
Location: Carter Lake-South Shore and Eagle Campgrounds, Flatiron Reservoir, Horsetooth Reservoir-South Bay Campground
Reports to: Campground Host

ROLE

Campground Program Volunteers donate their time gathering campers in the evening to share music, stories and/or natural resource educational programs at a scenic reservoir campground. They also provide excellent customer service to the public.

DUTIES

Duties vary, but can be a combination of the following:

  • Prepare a program of at least thirty minutes to be performed in an outdoor setting
  • Arrive at the performance location at least thirty minutes prior to the event
  • Coordinate each event with the location campground host
  • Perform programs at the assigned location
  • Prepare and send to staff a one-page event evaluation form after each event
  • Commit to three (3) events per summer

QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS

  • Friendly and courteous to staff and event participants.
  • Ability to develop and perform imaginative storytelling-entertainment in an outdoor setting in the evening
  • Make every effort to orient the music, stories and tall tales to the local area
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with County staff and the general public
  • Communicate effectively in person and by telephone
  • Provide own transportation
  • Complete volunteer orientation and training

PARKS AND OPEN LANDS RESPONSIBILITY

  • Prepare and train volunteers through orientation and on-the-job-training
  • Organize and schedule volunteers in an efficient and timely manner
  • Provide necessary supervision
  • Evaluate effectiveness of volunteer training
  • Provide feedback to volunteers either written or verbal regarding their performance
  • Recognize and reward volunteers as valued team members

VOLUNTEER'S RESPONSIBILITY

  • Present yourself in a professional manner in behavior and dress
  • Be prepared for your first assignment
  • Provide excellent customer service to staff and visitors
  • Follow through with time commitment explained at orientation
  • Keep accurate record of time worked on forms provided and turn them in on a monthly basis
  • Be on time or call in if can't make it on scheduled work days and line-up a substitute to take your place
  • Provide own transportation to event location
  • Prepare and send to County staff a one-page event evaluation form
  • Assist campground hosts to extinguish storytelling campfire if applicable

RISKS

  • Driving to and from event location
  • Smoke from Storytelling fire
  • Inclement weather (lightening, rain, etc.)
  • Disease, stings, or bites from insects, such as mosquitoes and spiders.
