Emission Extensions

An emission extension may be issued if your vehicle is registered in Colorado and is located out of state because of one of the following circumstances approved by Larimer County.

  1. You are a student attending school or you are in military service.
  2. You are seasonally or temporarily working out of state.
  3. You are temporarily located out of state or your vehicle is disabled.
The State of Colorado may also approve an emission extension for the following reasons:
  1. Vehicle Disabled out of State
  2. Colorado resident Working out of state
  3. Colorado Resident Temporarily out of state

If an extension is approved by the State of Colorado, it may be necessary to obtain an emission test from the state where the vehicle is located if that state requires emission testing. If that state is not an emission testing state, a VIN inspection (DR2395) must be performed by a law enforcement official in that state.

While an approved extension will exempt you from the Colorado Emissions requirements, you may be in violation of other states vehicle registration laws, in which you currently reside. You may be required to register your vehicle in that state. You are advised to contact the local vehicle registration office for more information.

When the vehicle returns to Colorado an emissions test must be completed and proof of emission inspection must be submitted to our office.
