Boats, kids, fun, and an opportunity! As one of last year’s participants, Joanna Downing Flanigan, put it, “When one of the instructors started talking about what we were going to do and learn at camp I realized I was in for a great time.”
Carter Lake Sailing Club will again provide three, fun-filled weekends for 10- to 16-year olds to sail this summer on beautiful Carter Lake. Both first time sailors and those more advanced will have the opportunity to sail sunfish, learning how to maneuver around the lake. Not only will youth be introduced to a wonderful sport, but they may perhaps discover a love for sailing that can last a lifetime.
Sessions are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the following weekends: June 30 & July 1, July 14 & 15, July 28 & 29
Cost is $50 per weekend, plus a one time materials fee of $25 to cover books and t-shirts. Registration information is at the Carter Lake Sailing Club website, www.sailcarter.org
The first two weekends are for beginner/intermediate sailors, and will focus on basic sailing skills such as points of sailing, parts of the boat and sail, weather awareness, care of the boat, and understanding sail trim enough to successfully pilot the boat. The third weekend is open to those who have attended either or both of the first two sessions. More advanced skills will be taught, races will be held, and all will get the chance to helm a keel boat.
The junior sailing program is run entirely by volunteers who love to sail and hope to pass on their passion for the sport to the next generation. Junior sail camps are fun as well as safe, and provide the opportunity for individual accomplishment as well as promoting teamwork. It is a great way for kids to spend a part of their summers.
“I also learned that I love sailing! I definitely want to take more sail lessons next summer and can’t wait to see old friends and meet new ones.” Joanna Downing Flanigan
