Specializes
in recovering, analyzing, and presenting data from computers for use in
criminal investigations or as evidence in criminal justice proceedings.
Successful
applicants will be required to complete all of the following prior to hire:

Written
examination

oral board interview

In-depth
background investigation, including criminal and credit history

Psychological
assessment and medical exam, including drug test
·
Must be 21 years
of age and be legally authorized to work in the United States

Must have

ESSENTIAL
FUNCTIONS:
·
As related to
computer forensic investigations, perform investigative work on assigned cases.
·
Conduct
undercover Internet operations and investigations of narcotics trafficking,
crimes against children, fraud, and other criminal activity, as necessary.
·
Assist other
Sheriff’s Office employees with computer crime investigations.
·
Answer technical
questions regarding computer forensic investigations and other related areas as
delegated by a supervisor; conduct training of law enforcement personnel as it
pertains to computer-related crime and technology.
·
Participate in
multi-jurisdictional investigative task forces; may be assigned on a long-term
basis to multi-jurisdictional task force.
·
Review and make
investigative determinations on assigned cases; assume responsibility for
difficult and complex cases.
·
Contact and
cooperate with other agencies in matters relating to the investigation of
computer crimes, the apprehension of offenders, or the smooth functioning of
the Sheriff’s Office Investigations Unit.
·
Prepare
investigative reports and other documentation required as a part of assigned
duties.
·
Assist with the
preparation of affidavits for search and arrest warrants in computer crime
investigations to include all necessary court documents.
·
Complete and
maintain records, logs, and reports including, but not limited to, the
effective case management of an ongoing caseload, including the prioritizing
and effective disposition of those cases.
·
Preserve good
working relationships with the general public and representatives from other
criminal justice agencies.
·
Conduct analysis
of computer and high technology equipment, electronic, and magnetic media and
other items seized under legal authority.
·
Gather and
preserve evidence in accordance with governing practices and techniques.
·
Attend refresher
and advanced training in topics of computer forensics and computer crime
investigations on at least an annual basis.
·
Assist District
Attorney during trial preparation and trials involving computer crime; testify
and present evidence in Court.
If Colorado P.O.S.T. certified:
·
Assist with the
planning, coordination, and carrying out of criminal investigations at the
local, state, and Federal levels in the serving of search warrants, making of
arrests, and the execution of raids and other activities in support of computer
crime investigations.
·
Conduct
interviews with victims, complainants, witnesses, and suspects of computer
crimes including interviewing small children and other individuals who may be
more difficult to interview.
·
Transport
suspects for booking.
·
Enforce
municipal, County, and state laws.
·
Identify and
process clandestine laboratories after completion of specialized, mandatory
training in the procedures of clandestine laboratories.
·
Execute search
warrants (including coordination of personnel necessary to execute warrants);
serve warrants, subpoenas, and civil documents.
·
Administer first
aid and/or CPR in emergency situations.
OTHER
DUTIES:

Perform other
duties as appropriate or necessary for performance of the job.
If Colorado P.O.S.T. certified:
·
May be required
to perform any of the duties required of a Patrol Deputy assigned to a Patrol
Platoon.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge
of:
·
Agency rules and
regulations.
·
County, State,
Federal, and international statutes related to computer forensic investigation.
·
Current court
decisions affecting statutes related to computer forensic investigation.
·
Computer
forensic investigation techniques.
·
Case management
techniques.
If Colorado P.O.S.T. certified:
·
Law enforcement
and prevention procedures including patrol, crime prevention, traffic control,
investigation, records and reports, identification techniques, evidence
handling, and First Aid.
Ability
to:
·
Gather,
assemble, analyze, evaluate, and use facts and evidence.
·
Interpret and
apply laws and regulations.
·
Abide by and
follow all procedures relating to the proper handling and chain-of-custody of
evidence in computer forensic laboratories.
·
Communicate
clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
·
Work in
stressful situations.
·
Prioritize case
management as well as task assignments for self and other personnel.
If Colorado P.O.S.T. certified:
·
Use and care for
firearms or other agency property.
Experience
and Training:
Any combination of experience and
training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is
qualifying.
Experience:
·
Two years of
full-time experience in forensic computer crime detection and investigations.
Training:
·
Must have attended and completed computer forensics and/or
computer crime investigations training from one of the following: Federal Law Enforcement
Training Center – SCERS or CIAETP, IACIS, NTI, National White Collar Crime Center
– Basic/ Advanced Data Analysis and Recovery, A+ Certification, FBI CART, or
SEARCH.Org.
·
Special consideration will be given to forensic crime scene
experience.
·
Graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate’s,
Bachelor’s, or Master’s Degree in Computer Operations, Computer Programming,
Computer Science, Business, Business Administration, Engineering, Mathematics,
Statistics, Statistical Analysis, General Studies, or a field related to
Computer Forensic Investigation.
·
Completion of
Interview and Interrogation course and Major Case Investigation Course.
Licenses/Certifications:
·
Possession of a
valid Colorado State Peace Officer Certificate is preferred, but not mandatory.
·
Possession of
First Aid and CPR Certificates, if Colorado P.O.S.T. certified.
·
Possession of,
or ability to obtain, a valid Colorado Driver’s License.

in public contacts; may be required to talk extensively on the telephone.

Must have
acceptable hearing to hear well on the telephone, radio, and in public
contacts.

May be required

Must be able to
stoop, bend, stretch, twist, reach, kneel, squat, and balance.
·
Must be able to
lift, carry, drag, or push 100 pounds both alone and with help.

May be required
to climb ladders, enter small confined areas, and work in hazardous work areas.
·
May be subjected
to caustic, flammable, or other hazardous materials.
·
Must be capable
of working under stressful situations.

Must have good
cognitive skills and awareness of work accuracy.
·
Must have
ability to concentrate on more than one task at a time and to make independent
decisions.
·
Must have
acceptable eyesight to perform computer duties, drive a vehicle, and perform
law enforcement duties (if Colorado P.O.S.T. certified).

Must have fine
and gross motor skills and use of fingers, hands, and arms to perform computer
duties, operate equipment, or handle firearms and law enforcement duties (if
Colorado P.O.S.T. certified).

Must be able to
engage in physically strenuous activities.

May be required
to run for short distances.
·
May be required
to work in inclement weather conditions.

Must be able to
meet all qualifications including physical, firearms, etc. required as a
Larimer County Patrol Deputy.
