A DRIVER’S SUPPLEMENTAL APPLICATION MUST BE COMPLETED TO APPLY FOR THIS POSITION.

 

MUST BE ABLE TO WORK ROTATING SHIFTS WHICH MAY INCLUDE

NIGHTS, WEEKENDS, AND HOLIDAYS.

 

Successful applicants will be required to complete all of the following prior to hire:

·         Written examination.

·         Integrity and oral board interview.

·         In-depth background investigation, including criminal and credit history.

·         Medical exam, including drug test.

·         Physical assessment test based on the essential job functions.

 

This is an entry-level position within the Alternative Sentencing Services Specialist series.  This position is used as a training class for incumbents typically without prior, or with little, experience and knowledge in this field or area.  This position works under immediate supervision while learning job tasks.  Work is characterized by development of basic and routine skills and knowledge required to perform the job such as skills in conflict resolution and crisis intervention, understanding the workings of a correctional or detention environment, and understanding inmate or criminal behavior.  This position supervises and monitors inmates or offenders placed under a court-ordered custody or an alternative sentencing program.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

·         In accordance with the parameters of the program, supervise and/or monitor inmates/offenders in work release facility, electronic home detention, day or weekend reporting program, off-site work crews, or in transporting adults between detention facilities, courts, or work sites.

·         Conduct orientations for new inmates/offenders to explain facility and/or program rules and procedures.

·         Monitor inmate living and work areas; assign and supervise work assignments; supervise meal service.

·         Monitor the safety and security of facility and control of contraband including conducting searches of inmates/offenders and living areas, conducting security checks of facility, facility perimeter, windows, doors, and work areas, conducting checks of inmate possessions, mail, and visitors, and supervising visits.

·         Collect urinalysis samples, complete appropriate paperwork, and submit samples for drug testing; administer alcohol tests.

·         Maintain inmate/offender accountability by conducting periodic formal counts, checking inmates in/out of facility, conducting phone or on-site checks of inmate/offender locations, and conducting random monitoring of inmate activities.

·         Work with courts, probation, and other law enforcement agencies regarding inmate compliance with programs; coordinate with community agencies, employers, and related groups to facilitate employment, work projects, transportation, or community service commitments.

·         Investigate minor and major program violations; write incident reports; determine and carry-out appropriate sanctions up to, and including, revocation and return to a more secure detention facility; prepare reports and recommendations.

·         Receive and process inmate payments/funds, process fees, and balance accounts.

·         Enter data into computer systems or databases; lookup information in database; create basic word processor documents and enter data into spreadsheets; use email to communicate. 

·         Monitor and dispense inmate medications.

·         Perform administrative and recordkeeping duties in support of program; document inmate/offender behavior and program activities; maintain inmate/offender records; process various billing and/or program and related agency documents.

·         Supervise large inmate work crews in the performance of manual labor tasks such as painting, landscaping, building trails, and other tasks.

·         Comprehend and apply basic manual labor and general trade skills when working with inmate work crews for various job assignments.

OTHER DUTIES:

·         Coordinate and perform special projects as assigned and required.

·         Testify in court as required.

·         Perform other duties as appropriate or necessary for performance of the job.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of:

·         Principles, practices, and objectives as related to crisis intervention, conflict resolution, and security methods in an inmate/offender detention program. 

·         Scope and application of laws and regulations pertaining to correctional facilities, inmate confinement, and/or alternative sentencing programs.

·         Practices and techniques of counseling and interviewing.

·         Court and criminal justice processes and systems.

·         Recordkeeping and reporting procedures.

·         Principles of human behavior.

·         Routine software and business applications including, but not limited to, word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software, and databases. 

·         Inmate Work Crew Programs Only: Safe operation of a variety of hand and power tools.

Ability to:

·         Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other County employees, representatives of other agencies and organizations, and members of the community.

·         Communicate effectively orally, in writing, and via various forms of electronic media.

·         Use office automation systems including basic proficiency with computer applications such as e-mail, word processor, spreadsheet, and database look-up and/or entry.

·         Supervise inmates and organize large inmate groups to accomplish designated tasks.

·         Effectively respond to conflict situations and people in conflict.

·         Perform CPR and respond in a medical emergency.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:  Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.

Experience:

·         Some experience in a directly related field or in the performance of similar duties and responsibilities preferred.

Training:

·         Equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Sociology, Psychology, Criminal Justice, Human Services, Public Administration, or a related field.

Licenses/Certifications:

·         Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Colorado Commercial Driver’s License with passenger endorsement.

·         Possession of, or ability to obtain, CPR and First Aid certifications by date of hire.

·         Maintain continuing education hours annually or as required.

 

PHYSICAL / MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

·         Must have acceptable hearing to hear well on the telephone and radio and appropriate voice skills to be clearly understood on the telephone, radio, and at job sites for all positions.

·         Must be able to stand, stoop, reach, stretch, bend, or squat to perform various duties at job sites as a workender staff member.

·         Must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull forty pounds to place supplies and open bus engine hood.

·         Must be able to access bus and pool vehicles.

·         Must be able to work outside in all types of seasonal weather as a workender staff member.

·         May be required to climb ladders, climb stairs, enter small confined areas, and work in hazardous work areas as a workender staff member.

·         Must be capable of engaging in sometimes physically strenuous activities at job sites, such as hiking trails in the mountains, climbing ladders, lifting and carrying equipment, and other manual labor tasks.

·         May be required to work with hand and power tools as a workender staff member.

·         May be subjected to caustic, flammable, or other hazardous materials as a workender staff member.

·         May require long walking up to seven miles or standing up to four hours continuously as a workender staff member or sporadic periods of walking or standing as a work release staff member.

·         May require seated position up to two hours continuously.

·         Must be able to work under stressful conditions.

·         Must be able to obtain and maintain First Aid and community CPR certifications.

·         Must be able to obtain and maintain Commercial Driver’s License.  This includes preliminary and random drug testing as a condition of employment.
