ROTATING SHIFT WORK REQUIRED.
Successful applicants will
be required to meet all of the following qualifications prior to hire:
·
Must be 21 years of age.
·
Must be legally authorized to
work in the United States.
·
Pass written examination.
·
Pass integrity and oral board
interviews.
·
Pass polygraph exam.
·
Pass in-depth background
investigation, including criminal history and financial status.
·
Pass a physical assessment test
based on the essential job functions.
·
Pass psychological assessment
and medical exam, including drug testing.
·
Current First Aid and community
CPR certificates required by date of hire.
·
Cannot have a felony
conviction.
·
No misdemeanor convictions
involving Domestic Violence.
·
No use of illegal drugs within
the past five years.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
·
Effect arrests, forcibly if
necessary, using handcuffs and other restraints, subdue resisting suspects
using approved techniques of arrest control, defensive tactics and weapons, and
resort to the use of hands and feet and other approved weapons in defense of
self or others.
·
Prepare investigative and other
reports, sketches, and drawings using appropriate grammar, symbols, and
mathematical computations.
·
Conduct visual and audio
surveillance for extended periods of time.
·
Exercise independent judgment in
determining when there is reasonable suspicion to detain, when probable cause
exists to search and arrest, and when appropriate force may be used, and to
what degree.
·
Maintain knowledge of current
Colorado Revised Statutes and County ordinances.
·
Maintain knowledge and awareness
of recent court rulings and legal standards in order to effectively enforce
laws and ordinances while protecting the rights of citizens.
·
Operate a law enforcement vehicle
during both the day and night, in emergency situations involving speeds in
excess of posted limits, in congested traffic, and in unsafe road conditions
caused by factors such as fog, smoke, rain, ice, and snow.
·
Communicate effectively and
coherently over law enforcement radio channels while initiating and responding
to radio communications.
·
Gather information in criminal
investigations by interviewing and obtaining the statements of victims,
witnesses, suspects, and confidential informers.
·
Pursue fleeing suspects.
·
Assist in County search and rescue
operations.
·
Load, unload, aim, and fire
handguns, shotguns, and other agency firearms under conditions of stress that
justify the use of deadly force and at levels of proficiency prescribed in
certification standards.
·
Perform searches of people, vehicles,
buildings, and large outdoor areas which may involve detaining people and
stopping suspicious vehicles and persons.
·
Engage in law enforcement patrol
functions that include walking on foot patrol and physically checking the doors
and windows of buildings to ensure they are secure.
·
Effectively communicate with
people, including juveniles, by giving information and directions, mediating
disputes, and advising of rights and processes.
·
Demonstrate effective
communication skills in court and other formal settings.
·
Detect and collect evidence and
substances that provide the basis of criminal offenses and infractions and/or
that indicate the presence of dangerous conditions.
·
Perform rescue functions at
accidents, emergencies, and disasters to include directing traffic,
administering emergency medical aid, lifting, dragging, and carrying people
away from dangerous situations, and securing and evacuating people from
particular areas.
·
Endure verbal and mental abuse
when confronted with the hostile views and opinions of suspects and other
people encountered in antagonistic environments.
·
Process and transport prisoners
using handcuffs and other appropriate restraints.
·
Put on and operate a gas mask in
situations where chemical munitions are being deployed.
·
Put on and operate protective
equipment including air filtering devices in situations where hazardous
chemical, biological, or other types of airborne elements are present.
·
Extinguish small fires by using a
fire extinguisher and other appropriate means.
·
Read and comprehend legal and
non-legal documents including the preparation and processing of such documents
as citations, affidavits, and warrants.
·
Contact and cooperate with other
law enforcement agencies in matters relating to the investigation of crimes and
the apprehension of offenders.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of:
·
Basic principles and procedures in
law enforcement.
·
A variety of major and minor
provisions in criminal and civil law procedures.
·
Colorado statutory law and constitutional law.
·
A variety of techniques used in
law enforcement in patrol, investigation, and crime prevention.
·
Operation and care of firearms.
·
First aid and cardio-pulmonary
resuscitation techniques.
Ability to:
·
Observe accurately and remember
names, faces, numbers, incidents, and places.
·
Use and care of firearms.
·
Think and act quickly in
emergencies.
·
Judge situations and people
accurately.

accordance with the policies and regulations of the Larimer County Sheriff's
Office.
EXPERIENCE AND
TRAINING:
·
Equivalent to the completion of
the twelfth grade, supplemented by specialized training in Administration of
Justice, Police Science, Public or Business Administration, or a related field.
License and Certificates:
·
Currently certified as a peace
officer in the State of Colorado.
·
Possession of an appropriate,
valid Colorado Driver's License, or the ability to obtain one.
·
Possession of current First Aid
and community CPR certificates.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL
REQUIREMENTS:
·
Must have acceptable eyesight to
perform patrol deputy duties.
·
Must be able to run from dark into
light or light into dark.
·
Must have appropriate voice skills
to be clearly understood on the telephone, radio, and in public contacts.
·
Must have acceptable hearing to
hear well on the telephone, radio, and in public contacts.
·
Must be able to sit, stand, or
walk for long periods of time.
·
Must be able to walk up and down
stairs.
·
Must be able to run for short or
long distances, change directions quickly while running, and run up and down
stairs.
·
Must be able to get into and out
of vehicle repeatedly.
·
Must be able to stoop, bend,
stretch, twist, reach, kneel, crawl, squat, climb, and balance.
·
Must be able to lift, carry, drag,
or push 100 pounds, both alone and with help.
·
Must be able to jump or leap over
small obstacles.
·
Must be able to push or pull to
manually open or shut heavy doors and/or force doors open.
·
Must be able to climb ladders or
stairs or climb up to and down from higher levels using unconventional methods.
·
Must be able to climb through
small openings or crawl or maneuver in small confined areas.

Must be able to work in hazardous
or dangerous work areas or situations.

Must be able to engage in
physically strenuous activities to perform patrol officer duties, including
using physical techniques to control persons; push or shove person to defend
self; wrestle people to the ground or on the ground; break up fights between
people; operate extinguishers or other fire equipment; etc.

Must have fine and gross motor
skills; hand dexterity; full use of fingers, hands, and arms; and good grip
strength to perform patrol officer duties, effectively use firearms, operate
equipment, etc.
·
May be subjected to caustic,
flammable, or other hazardous materials.
·
Must be capable of working under
stressful situations.
·
Must have quick reactions.
·
Must be capable of going from
stationary to exertion in an instant.
·
Must have good cognitive skills
and awareness of work accuracy.
·
Must have ability to concentrate
on more than one task at a time and to make independent decisions.
NOTE: Applicants who successfully
pass the testing and interviews will be placed on an eligibility list for
approximately one year.
