GeorgiaRenee
Georgia is a mentor for a 19 year-old youth in the community. She helps teach the youth life skills such as job and apartment hunting, and banking skills. They also like to do activities together such as hiking, fishing, and Bible studies. She is the September 2001 Outstanding Volunteer Award winner for Larimer County Dept. of Human Services. Renee is a mentor for a 12 year-old girl who shares her many interests. They enjoy attending music concerts, movies, and going to restaurants together. By modeling a healthy lifestyle, Renee provides the youth with an optimistic look on the future.

DianaRebecca
Diana is a graduate student intern from CSU's Social Work Department. She is the first to intern with the Volunteer Program and is developing the Family Mentor concept. She spends 14 hours a week learning interview skills, doing background checks, meeting with community resource agencies, helping with monthly volunteer and intern trainings, and is learning how to match mentors with youth. Rebecca is a Service-Learning student from CSU. Her project is to develop a brochure for the concept of Family Mentoring.

One-on-One Opportunities

  • Develop a one-on-one mentoring relationship with a youth.
  • Provide support for adoptive parents.
  • Help youth develop their library skills.
  • Teach and support a family in their home.
  • Provide family mentoring.
  • Supporting youth offenders during their restitution.
  • Tutor youth to improve literacy and math skills.
  • Teach youth how to volunteer themselves.
  • Teach emancipated youth life skills, such as balancing a checkbook, renting an apartment, or talking to a landlord.

Volunteering with Groups

  • Facilitate a children's group.
  • Participate in building and construction projects.
  • Create your own youth group based on your interests/skills or vocation.
  • Develop groups that promote healthy habits through exercise and nutrition.
  • Facilitate parent education groups.
  • Facilitate work crews for Community Services.
  • Support youth who are performing community service.
  • Teach basic skills, games, and social skills in the computer lab.
  • Co-facilitate or provide language interpretation with Family Group Conferencing (mediation that results in a treatment plan formed by the family members.)

Other Supportive Activities

  • Assist with client transportation needs.
  • Provide support using your clerical skills.
  • Provide donations to support ongoing programs.
  • Help distribute needed resources.
  • Work with other organizations such as the Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. to provide activities for youth.
  • Assist with data entry for various units.
  • Take part in seasonal projects and celebrations.
  • Collaborate with the faith community to meet children's needs and help them to feel they are a part of the community.

There are constantly different volunteer opportunities (short-term and long-term) within the programs of the Children, Youth & Family Division (CYF).

CYF has also developed a relationship with Colorado State University to attract volunteers. Opportunities are made available to students through departmental internships, as well as through the C.S.U. Service-Learning and Volunteer Programs.
