Formerly known as AFDC (Aid for Families of Dependent Children), TANF (Temporary Assistance to Needy Families) is the federal program that provides monthly cash assistance to qualifying families (at least one parent and one child) while preparing for, looking for and/or maintaining employment. Our county's version of the federal legislation is Larimer County Works, which is designed to assist low-income families in moving from monthly cash assistance into the workplace.
If you apply for Larimer County Works/TANF, you are also applying for food stamps, Medicaid, and child support services. In addition, child care assistance and other supportive services are available while you prepare for or look for a job.
An application is required for Larimer County Works/TANF and the program is limited to families with dependent children or parents of an unborn child. Income guidelines are based on the number of family members in the home. You must have a gross monthly income below the established program income limits. Documentation of any income, bank accounts, investments, and vehicles are used to see if a family qualifies.
If you are approved for Larimer County Works/TANF, you will be asked to participate in a work-related activity. The required number of hours per week will be determined by the age of your children and whether or not you are in a two-parent household.
Work activities include:
If you are a minor parent, you must attend high school or a GED program and live with your parents or another approved adult. Everyone 18 years of age or older needs to be assessed for barriers to employment and must sign a contract to focus on becoming employed. (Details about these requirements as well as other policies are provided in the list to the right.) Work experience, job training, and job placement are provided in partnership with the Larimer County Workforce Center.
Heads of households must begin participating in a work-related activity as soon as possible, but no later than 24 months from the month they receive their first TANF payment. In addition, families are eligible to receive TANF for no more than five years (60 months) in a lifetime.
To obtain Larimer County Works/TANF you must be seen in person by a Larimer County Works/TANF technician. Additionally, you will have to attend a Larimer County Works Orientation which will last about 4 1/2 hours. Please make your own child care arrangements.
If you choose not to apply for Larimer County Works/TANF, you may still apply for food stamps, Medicaid and/or child care assistance.
