Presentation About Mountain Pine Beetle Now Available
The number of trees infested with mountain pine beetle (MPB) is increasing statewide. In 2004, 1,256,320 trees were affected, compared with 275,000 in 2000 and only 13,000 in 1996. Though MPB is not a major problem at this time in Larimer County, an increase in infested trees has been noted in the Estes Park, Red Feather and upper Poudre areas. The lodgepole pine forests to our west in Grand County have been devastated by MPB. The forest landscape in that area will be affected for many years. When it comes to mountain pine beetle infestations, being proactive is less time-consuming and less expensive then taking action after trees and forests are infested by this pest. To this end, the Larimer County forester, Dave Lentz, has developed a PowerPoint presentation about mountain pine beetle and is available to present it and discuss the issue with interested parties. Call Mr. Lentz at (970) 498-5765 for more information or to schedule a presentation.

Forester and Landfill Working Together to Prevent the Spread of Tree Pests
To help prevent the spread of the spruce ips beetle and Dutch elm disease, the Larimer County Landfill is now diverting to the general fill area (where regular trash is dumped) all spruce and elm trees and branches that it receives. Previously they were included with other branches to be ground into mulch. The diversion will begin in April and continue through October. If you have questions concerning this matter, please contact the Larimer County Solid Waste Department at (970) 498-5760 or Dave Lentz, County Forester, at (970) 498-5765.
