The food system is like any other system — it has a lot of parts. A Northern Colorado Regional Food system assessment looks at the various components of the food system and determines where it is working well and which parts need strengthening. Generally, the components of the food system are:

  1. food/agricultural production
  2. food processing and distribution
  3. marketing, consumer choices and access
  4. consumption and public health

The Northern Colorado Regional Food System Assessment will study the food system as it exists. Using that baseline, recommendations can be made for enhancing the food system for our community's benefit.

Larimer County is hosting an Open House on Tuesday, October 5th. Researchers from Colorado State University’s Department of Agriculture and Resource Economics will be presenting regional data related to the 4 elements of the food system.   Local residents' feedback is a vital component of the Northern Colorado Regional Food System Assessment project.  Please join the discussion and enjoy 'local food' refreshments.

Each of the three counties participating in the Northern Colorado Regional Food System Assessment will host a separate public meeting in July 2010.  Researchers from Colorado State University's Department of Agriculture and Resource Economics will present project findings and gather feedback from the public. Meeting dates and locations can be found on the Public Meetings page.

The Northern Colorado Regional Food System Assessment is funded by a grant from the Colorado Department of Local Affairs along with participating funds from Larimer, Weld, and Boulder Counties, Colorado State University, Colorado State University Extension, and the Fort Collins Downtown Development Authority.

A Kickoff Meeting was held in December 2009. In the weeks that followed, each County assembled a lead team, known as a Project Advisory Team (PAT). In January and February, Project Advisory Teams from Larimer, Boulder and Weld County developed specific county objectives and selected a representative to the Steering Committee.

The Steering Committee will ensure that each County's objectives align with Regional Goals stated in the grant. The Steering Committee held its first meeting in February.
