Hay Preservation

Hay preservatives and drying agents are designed to reduce molding and fermentation.
Preservatives
inhibit fungal and bacterial growth in high moisture hay.  Biological inoculants are the most widely used preservatives in Colorado.
Drying agents
quicken the drying process in the field before hay is baled. While drying agents have been found useful in some alfalfa production systems, they have not been effective for grass hay. Hay crushers or crimpers can also reduce drying time. Drying agents are not widely used in Colorado.
