Larimer County's first modern roundabout was constructed this past summer at the intersection of Taft Hill Road and Vine Drive in northwest Fort Collins and has been in use since August. As a part of the project completion, a post construction project newsletter was mailed to approximately 375 area residents. The newsletter included project information and a survey that welcomed citizens to provide feedback to project staff. More than 100 surveys were returned (over 25%).
A summary of the results is provided below:
Use Of A Roundabout Versus Traffic Signal
The survey respondents are very supportive of the use of a modern roundabout in this location - with 87% percent public support. Prior to the construction of the roundabout, public support was approximately 55%. An increase in public support for roundabouts once they are open to traffic is typical across the U.S.Communication
88% of the respondents felt that they had enough opportunities to learn about the project and provide input. 62% of the respondents indicated that the County did a good job responding to comments and incorporating their ideas. 76% of returned surveys indicated that the county and contractor did a good job communicating during construction.Function and Safety To Date
The intersection is functioning very well, with a significant decrease in vehicular delay since conversion from a 4-way stop to a roundabout. Traffic backups (queues) during peak hours have been largely eliminated. There has been only one reported traffic accident since the roundabout's opening - a non-injury, minor damage accident. In comparison, the 4-way stop condition was averaging more than 5 accidents per year.Overall Project
The primary goal of the project was to improve function and safety of roadway users. 85% of the respondents indicated that we had met the goal.| Project Manager: | Kyle Arend | (970) 498-5734 |
