Public Works

The Public Works division comprises the following departments and functions:

The practice of "Public Works" extends back to the very beginnings of civilization, predating monuments as old as the Pyramids. Public Works professionals have practiced their art and craft almost as long as human beings have been congregating in established communities and cities. Athens, Rome, Pompeii, Babylon and other cities dating back to 600 B.C. and beyond are known to have been served with such public works facilities as roads, bridges, canals, aqueducts, and other water and sewer systems. Some of the oldest public works, ancient road systems, go back as far as 2500 B.C. in China and Egypt.

Despite its long history, "Public Works" is still at times difficult to define and recognize, and for many people, difficult to appreciate-that is, until the day Public Works stop working. To insure that day never comes, a wide range of Public Works professionals go about the business of providing and maintaining the essential infrastructure and services that preserve and enhance the public good every day with quiet determination.

In Larimer County, Public Works consists of six different departments: Engineering, Fleet Services, Natural Resources, Road & Bridge, Solid Waste, and The Ranch. In an effort to help citizens understand the range of the services they provide, these six Public Works departments have created annual reports to share some of the highlights of the past year. The annual reports for the year 2008 can be viewed by clicking on the links below:
