Youth Tobacco Use

Date Updated: 06/23/2011

The Healthy Kids Colorado Survey on Tobacco and Health (HKCS-TH)* was conducted in the fall of 2001 and repeated in the fall 2006 and fall 2008. A stratified random sample of Colorado schools was taken, with two classrooms per grade chosen from each school. Students were given the opportunity to participate or decline the HKCS-TH. The Tobacco Program Evaluation Group (TPEG), University of Colorado Denver & Health Sciences Center, prepared the report. TPEG received a grant from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment through the State Tobacco Education and Prevention Partnership (STEPP). In 2001, a total of 16,157 students in 130 schools completed the survey, 18,064 students from 137 schools completed it in 2006, and 21,517 students from 140 schools completed it in 2008.

The original intent was to replicate this survey every two years, however the survey has not been done since 2008 due to budget shortfalls.

*The survey was called Tobacco Attitudes and Behaviors Survey (TABS) in 2001.
