Veterans

The United States Census defines a civilian veteran as 'someone 18 and older who is not currently on active duty, but who once served on active duty in the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard, or who served in the Merchant Marine during World War II.' People who served for a short period of time are included in this definition.

What these data tell us:

From 2001 to 2005, veteran adults represented steady percentages of the total adult population for the United States, Colorado, and Larimer County. The proportion of veterans in Colorado was slightly higher than the national percentage of veterans. In 2005, the proportion of veterans to the adult population in Larimer County, 10.9%, was the same as the national percentage.

What these data tell us:

The percentage of veterans in each Larimer County community were somewhat varied in 2000. The two communities with the lowest percentage of veterans in the total adult population were Fort Collins and Timnath, averaging 8% veterans. Red Feather Lakes had the highest percentage of veterans in Larimer County, 24% of the total population. The average percentage of veterans in Larimer County and its communities was 14% of the adult population.

As seen in the 'Veterans by Period of Service' chart, the majority of veterans in Larimer County served before May 1975, meaning they are currently approximately 50 years of age or older. Larimer County communities with a high percentage of older adults, such as Red Feather Lakes and Estes Park, also have higher percentages of veterans.

What these data tell us:

In 2000, the largest percentage of veterans, 62%, served during World War II, Korean War, and/or the Vietnam era. Of the 62%, half served during the Vietnam era (1964 - 1975) only.
