Transient Persons Held at the Larimer County Detention Center

Date posted:03/23/2003

Inmates at the Larimer County Detention Center are listed as transient if they actually state that they are transient, or if they say that they have no address. If inmates list a shelter or anywhere else as their mailing address, they are not considered transient. While technically they may be homeless/transient, they are not counted as such because the computer system has an address listed.

What these data tell us:

The monthly average number of transient people held in the Larimer County Detention Center has increased 40% in the past two years from 21.3 transients per month in 2000 to 29.9 in 2002. The data does not indicate any clear seasonal patterns or cycles when transients are more or less likely to be brought to the Detention Center.

It is important to remember 1) the charts represent the raw numbers rather than rates per population and 2) the data represent the total number of incarcerations, but each transient may have been incarcerated one or more times. Frequently the same person will be arrested several times in a year or month, making it impossible to determine a total number of non-duplicated transients that were detained. Information for 2003 only includes January and February.
