What these data tell us:
From 2001 to 2005, there was a decrease in both fertility and birth rates for the majority of Non-Hispanic groups (White, Black, and American Indian/ Alaska Native). However, rates were unavailable for some groups because there were fewer than three births for the year. During this period, White teens had similar fertility rates from year to year, when compared to other race groups whose rates fluctuated.American Indian teens had highest birth rates among other race groups, while
Hispanics had consistently higher fertility rates than the Non-Hispanic groups. Hispanics also had higher birth rates than Non-Hispanics.
See data table for number of teen births, as well as each group's population.
High fertility and birth rates for Hispanic females mirror results seen nationally. In a survey of teens in 2002, Hispanics were the least likely to use contraception during their first sexual encounter, and the most likely of ethnic groups to become pregnant before the age of 20 (24% of Hispanic respondents compared to 8% non-Hispanic respondents) (Centers for Disease Control).
