What these data tell us:

In Larimer County, the largest percentage of 2005 alcohol treatment admissions was among 35 to 44 year olds, closely followed by 24 to 34 and 18 to 24 year olds. The National Survey on Drug Use and Health compared questions about substance use and dependence to self-reported treatment participation to arrive at estimates of people needing, but not receiving treatment. In 2002, the Survey results indicated that 7.3% of persons aged 12 or older nationwide (about 17 million persons) needed but did not receive treatment for an alcohol problem. In Larimer County, about a quarter of 2005 treatment admissions for alcohol were female, similar to past years. Nationally, in 2004 women comprised 25% of all alcohol treatment admissions. What these data tell us:

While Hispanics were the second largest ethnicity in the Larimer County population (8.3%), they were over-represented in 2005 alcohol treatment admissions (23%). Nationally, 12% of alcohol treatment admissions in 2004 reported Hispanic ethnicity.

What these data tell us:

From 2003 to 2005, Larimer County methamphetamine (meth) treatment admissions increased 116%. Locally, criminal justice agencies began reporting an increase in the presence of meth in the community during that time. For example, the number of 'Narcotics' arrests, the category which encompasses meth arrests, more than doubled (118% increase) from 1999 to 2004. Similarly during that same time, the number of drug charges filed against adults in District Court grew by 151%. Nationally, methamphetamine admissions to treatment rose 11% between 2003 and 2004, and 25% between 2002 and 2004 (Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration).

In 2005, treatment for methamphetamine (meth) was equally prevalent for Larimer County adults age 18 to 25 and adults age 25 to 35. Meth treatment admissions among local youth decreased by 65% from 2003 to 2005. Nationally, 7.6% of youth treatment admissions in 2004 identified meth as their primary substance. What these data tell us:

Methamphetamine (meth) has been referred to as an 'equal opportunity drug', meaning that use and addiction are equally distributed between males and females. In 2005 the number of Larimer County female admissions for meth treatment surpassed male admissions. Women find meth appealing because it causes weight loss and increases energy. Hispanics, the second largest ethnicity in the Larimer County population (8.3%), were over-represented in 2005 Methamphetamine treatment admissions (14%). Nationally, female treatment admissions identified meth as their primary substance almost twice as often as males (5.6% versus 10.1%).

What these data tell us:

Treatment admissions for Driving under the Influence (DUI) increased dramatically from 2003 to 2005. Reported DUI admissions increased 273% in two years, according to Colorado's Alcohol & Drug Abuse Division. On the other hand, adult DUI arrests in Larimer County fluctuated at a much lower rate during those years. In Colorado, ADAD, the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Division of the Colorado Department of Health & Human Services, develops and enforces regulations for Level I and Level II DUI education and treatment programs. Approximately 30,000 DUI offenders are referred to these programs each year in Colorado.
