What these data tell us:

Survey respondents were asked: 'Does your insurance cover at least part of the cost for mental health services?' The relatively high percentage (29.0%) of those who did not know whether their insurance covered mental health services may be explained by the fact that many residents may not have needed or used mental health services (see chart below). Between 2001 and 2007, the percentage of respondents who were unaware of their mental health coverage changed little.

The Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law describes the need for parity (equality) in insurance coverage for mental health problems. For more information, including information about fairness in mental health coverage and gaps in women and children's mental health care coverage, please see their website at the link above.

What these data tell us:

Survey respondents were asked: 'In the past 12 months, did you or any member of your household need and/or use any of the community services listed below?' The chart above represents data for the parts of this question that related to mental health services.

A total of 14.0% of respondents reported needing mental health services in 2007, a decrease of 31.7% from 2004. Of those needing mental health services, 3.0% did not get the help they (or their family members) needed; this represents an estimated 8,647 Larimer County residents (using 2007 total population estimates from the Colorado Department of Local Affairs).
